Wait times at other emergency departments

UI Health Care operates three emergency departments within Johnson County, Iowa.

You can view the other emergency department wait times here.

  • Downtown Campus
  • North Liberty Campus

Above are the average wait times experienced in the past hour, three-hour, and six-hour time frames. Please note:

  • You will be seen immediately if your medical condition is deemed to be life-threatening.
  • You will be screened quickly, even if your wait time appears to be long. "Wait time" is defined as the time you arrive in the Emergency Department to when you are placed in an exam room.
  • Displayed wait times are averages and may not be your experience. Your wait may vary, based on your medical condition and rapidly changing conditions within the Emergency Department.
  • Patients may be transferred to another UI Health Care Emergency Department location if necessary.
  • Afternoon and evening hours are generally busier and more likely to require a longer wait. We will do our best to see you as soon as possible.

For illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening and don’t require emergency medicine, visit our same-day care page to find health care options that fit your needs.

Emergency medicine services at university campus

The Emergency Department at the university campus is the only Level 1 trauma center for both adult and pediatric patients in the state. Here, we provide care for the most critically ill children and adults from all over the region. The multidisciplinary services work closely with medical and surgical departments at UI Health Care and UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital to optimize the care and outcomes of patients of all ages.

What the Level 1 trauma center designation – the highest designation available – means for patients:

  • Our providers can offer total care for every aspect of injury.
  • In-house coverage by general surgeons is available 24/7, with prompt availability of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, and radiology.
  • Our hospital is a comprehensive referral resource for communities in nearby regions—including, but not limited to, central and eastern Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
  • An emphasis on education—public education for injury prevention, training the next generation of emergency providers, and continuing education for our staff.

The Emergency Department on the university campus also offers:

  • Access to many specialties for consultation and admission—including, but not limited to, anesthesia, cardiology, internal medicine, orthopedics and orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, and trauma surgery.
  • The state’s only emergency medicine residency training program.
  • Air transportation via AirCare, the only flight program in the state affiliated with an emergency medicine residency program and the only flight program in the state supplementing its medical crew with flight physicians.
  • Eastern Iowa’s only board-certified pediatric emergency medicine specialists, with access to more than 200 pediatric specialists in dozens of medical fields.
