Is VelociCoaster Worth It?How to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (1)

VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando is the fastest rollercoaster of all the Universal theme parks with speeds up to 70 miles per hour! Thrill seekers rave about this ride not just for its speed but for its smooth inversions and seamless experience. This is not the type of rollercoaster that feels bumpy or jerky- nearly all reviews of this experience rave about how smooth it is.

The story of the ride is imagined to take place before the first Jurassic World film as guests try to escape the claws of the Velociraptors. The ride itself takes place in the middle of a Raptor paddock. The queue features sculptures of the four Raptors from Jurassic World- Blue, Delta, Echo, and Charlie. But the best part of the queue as you make your way through the Raptor Stable are the two animatronic Velociraptors Delta and Echo.

As for the coaster itself, Jurassic World VelociCoaster is the fastest and tallest launch coaster in Florida. The attraction includes four inversions with only a lap bar restraint which is a pretty thrilling way to experience an upside-down rollercoaster.

At the beginning of the ride, you launch 70mph in just 2.4 seconds through the Raptor paddock which is one of the fastest launches for a rollercoaster that thrill seekers will love. My son always raves about this part of the ride, especially the 155-foot tall drop. Some fun facts about the VelociCoaster that help explain the hype of this thrilling rollercoaster:

  • VelociCoaster has no brakes until it’s over.
  • VelociCoaster is the fastest roller coaster at any Universal Park.
  • VelociCoaster does not slow down – it actually speeds up, the second half of the ride is faster than the first, and it maintains some of its fastest speeds all the way to the final brakes.
  • VelociCoaster will have more extreme airtime than any other coaster at Universal, it’s all about speed, airtime, and direction changes. This airtime will be experienced not only right-side-up, but also upside-down, and even sideways.
  • There are several inversions on this ride that are not experienced on any other Universal coaster:
    • A dive loop where you rotate upside down while floating in your seat before diving down to the ground
    • An inverted stall where you quickly flip upside down and are weightless in your seat while navigating 100ft of inverted track
    • A one-of-a-kind high-speed barrel roll taken at around 50 mph where you roll upside down 360 degrees only a few feet from the surface of the lagoon

Jurassic World VelociCoaster has a minimum height requirement of 51 inches to ride and offers Child Swap for caregivers who want to ride if their kids are too short or not interested in the experience.

VelociCoaster Single RiderHow to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (3)

VelociCoaster offers single riders for guests who want to try and cut down on the standby wait time and do not mind riding separately from their parties. Keep in mind that the criteria of a single rider ensures you will likely be seated separately from your group.

However, in the case of VelociCoaster I do not recommend the single rider line. In my experience, the line for single rider moves very, very slowly. My son has frequently tried single rider and standby often and noticed that the standby line would be moving fast and the single rider line would be at a standstill. This seemed to be the case more often than not.

VelociCoaster Express PassHow to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (4)

For guests that have purchased Universal Orlando Express Pass, VelociCoaster has now been added to the service and this is by far the best way to experience the attraction. Due to the popularity of VelociCoaster, we did find this was one of the Express Pass lines that moved the slowest but it was still a far better experience than riding the attraction in the standby queue.

If you decide to opt for Express Pass during your visit, this is by far the best way we recommend riding VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando.

Rope Drop Strategy VelociCoasterHow to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (5)

The best way to rope drop VelociCoaster is to visit Islands of Adventure on a day thatthe Universal Orlando hotels do not have Early Entry. Most hotel guests go right for either VelociCoaster or Hagrid's during their Early Entry so this line will be quite long by the time you enter the park.

The good news is that most of the crowd does tend to go to Hagrid's since it is easily the most popular Universal Orlando attraction at the moment. This tends to hold true whether you are taking advantage of Early Entry or rope dropping the park with the regular theme park guests.

If Islands of Adventure is not doing Early Entry, then you have a good shot at riding VelociCoaster with a lower wait of the day. Plan on arriving at least 30 minutes prior to park opening and follow the signs- you will typically be held in the area by Seuss Landing and once you past the Mythos Restaurant you will see the crowd split into two groups towards VelociCoaster and Hagrids. Turn to the left to go towards VelociCoaster and the Jurassic Park area.

Best Time of Day to Ride VelociCoasterHow to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (6)

Similar to our advice on how to ride Hagrid's, VelociCoaster will also see the same high wait times in the morning as many guests are rushing either to Hagrids or VelociCoaster. The lines will start to lower drastically as the day goes on with the lowest standby time often falling right in the afternoon.

Despite that good news, I do not recommend this option. Since VelociCoaster is an outside attraction, the Orlando weather can cause ride closures which typically will happen in the afternoon. Universal Orlando will close most outdoor attractions for high winds, nearby lightning, and heavy rain. You do not want to risk missing out on this ride due to weather so riding earlier in the day is the best option.

How to Ride VelociCoaster for Guests with DisabilitiesHow to Ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando With Shortest Wait (7)

Guests with disabilities visiting Universal Orlando can utilize the Attractions Assistance Pass to ride. Simply take your pass up to the Team Member at the entrance of the attraction and they will issue a return time based on the current wait time. Since VelociCoaster can often have a long wait, this will tie up your AAP for quite awhile since you cannot use it for another ride until you redeem your spot for VelociCoaster. I recommend going to VelociCoaster first thing in the morning to get your return time and then enjoy the other attractions nearby.

The process for guests with disabilities has changed at Universal Orlando and guests are required to provide documentation before their arrival. Read more about how to apply for an Attractions Assistance Pass in our guide to navigating Universal Orlando with disabilities.

VelociCoaster is one of the best rollercoasters in the state of Florida and is worth the hype for thrill seekers to add to their day at Universal Orlando. It is a must to make time to ride this incredible rollercoaster now that know how you know how to ride VelociCoaster at Universal Orlando.
