Frankly I'm a bit shocked that, according to CrowdStrike, only 8.5MM Windows computers were impacted by the malformed .sys file that was pushed out on Friday. I actually expected that to be much higher (like double digits higher). I'd be really curious to know the total number of CrowdStrike-protected Windows versus other OS devices sometime...So checking for some stats it looks like Windows has about 30% of the OS global market share. And not all of the 8.5MM impacted Windows servers were part of production environments (some non-production Windows servers most likely remained in BSOD state over the weekend whereas prod had to have the "laying on of hands" by IT folks ASAP).Doing some back-of-the-napkin math here, let's conservatively assume that if we globally/collectively have 20MM total servers, 30% are running Windows. Drawing another generalization, let's say that the split between prod and non-prod is 60:40. So that's only 3.6MM production Windows devices (I don't count airport wall display devices with embedded Windows as "interesting" production devices FWIW). Working backwards from CrowdStrike's number, 60% of 8.5MM gives us a potential pool of at least 5.1MM production Windows devices. Pepper in a little bit of experience here with the belief that many enterprise companies don't buy licenses like CrowdStrike for _all_ devices in _all_ environments, that number will skew higher (only CrowdStrike has that real number of course, though it may be difficult for them to be sure which devices are prod versus non-prod unless there are hostgroups configured that say "production" or "prod" in their name). So there is a clear and emergent systemic risk going on here (with a plump helping of concentration risk on the side). The world doesn't run on Windows (with 30% OS market share), but the world definitely doesn't run very well without it.So my question to you all. In an understandably unhappy post-incident risk management and mitigation discussion with your leadership, which direction will you go on this regarding fault tolerance? Trend the count of Windows devices in production downwards (OS diversity) or consider having two EDR solutions (application diversity)? I'd argue that the former strategy costs less and addresses more types of risk and exposure than the latter. Love to hear your thoughts and comments.Reference:https://lnkd.in/eJu7h5uPBarry RabkinAaron RinehartOmkhar Arasaratnam
